The Five
To celebrate its fifth anniversary, airplain is launching a sleek active loudspeaker with incredible punch. Of course, the Five is also equipped with everything that makes an airplain active loudspeaker: a solid stainless steel housing, phase-linear reproduction and a graceful appearance. For the owners of airplain, Irene and Thomas Flammer, every new loudspeaker is somehow a gift. But the Five is a special gift to mark the fifth anniversary of the company from Kemptthal (Switzerland). As airplain makes no compromises when it comes to sound and consistently develops every product with the system concept in mind in order to transport as much of the original music as possible to the listener, the Five is also designed as an active system.
The Look
Music enthusiasts who have studied airplain a little more closely know that airplain products can be seamlessly integrated into the individual living space. This is partly because of the classic design and partly because of the extensive possibilities for customizing the loudspeaker in terms of color and materials. The Five was designed as a slim column speaker and requires nothing more than a streaming source, or a preamplifier if analog sources are preferred.
The Technique
The speaker system contains four ultra-long-throw bass-midrange drivers from Purifi and the Heil-A.M.T.® tweeter, known from the phli Mini and phli Slim. This was described in a test report as “probably one of the best tweeters”. This is certainly thanks to the excellent distortion behavior, but above all also thanks to the very wide-width reproduction, which promises high sound fidelity. The ap-AMT-M2 already starts transmitting below 900 Hz and this only ends again above the human hearing range. This means that the two ways each reproduce approximately half of the audible spectrum. With a total of 500 W amplifier power, the Five can generate a very high sound pressure level despite its compact volume, so that nothing stands in the way of live reproduction. All connections are embedded in the elegant base plate. A balanced analog or digital signal can be fed in via an RJ45 socket, as well as a 12 V trigger signal for switching on and off. The Five can be calibrated to the room using the airplain trim, creating the ideal conditions for precise reproduction in the listening room.
