Liam Howlett the founding member of The Prodigy has recently installed Unity Audio Boulder active 3 way monitors and the new Unity Audio Avalanche active 12” sub-woofer in his London Studio.

The 3 way active Boulders have custom discrete E.A.R designed amplifiers in a sealed enclosure with 2x ELAC 6.5” woofers and a ELAC 5”dual concentric midrange & 50kHz folded ribbon tweeter for fast, tight and brutally honest detailed reproduction. The Avalanche has a 12” downward firing woofer for low centre of gravity to reduce vibration and movement. The sealed cabinet has aperiodic vent feeding a second chamber to achieve a flat response down to 22Hz. Controls include crossover presets for Rock and Boulders as well as variable Low & High pass filters for custom setting with Unity Audio products, or with other manufactures. A wired foot-switch is also included to bypass the Avalanche and route full frequency back to the satellite monitors.

The Prodigy have been credited as pioneers of the big beat genre with their unique sound blending rave, hardcore techno, industrial, with electronic rock and punk. They have sold over 25 million records worldwide and won numerous awards including two Brit Awards – winning Best British Dance Act twice, three MTV Video Music Awards, two Kerrang! Awards, five MTV Europe Music Awards and two Grammy nominations.

“These Boulders and Avalanche fucking rock it for me! No technical bollox needs to be said here… I like to write loud and these deliver what I need for this new Prodigy record”

At Unity Audio we like to keep up to date with new projects and updates from our Rock and Boulder endorsees.

Today’s MONITORED features UK mix engineer / producer James Reynolds, who has mixing and production credits for artists such as The Saturdays, Tinie Tempah and Jessie J to name a few. More recently he has been mixing The Wanted’s new album ‘Word of Mouth’ which is up for release later this year.

James has been using Unity Audio Boulder monitors for his mixing projects, and is featured on the users section of our Unity Audio products.

“For me, being a mixer/producer I need a very accurate monitor and in my quest for perfection I found The Boulders are the best I auditioned by far.

You got to be brave at first and trust them because the mids and tops are not hyped but the benefit of this is that it doesn’t cover up the low mids and lows and therefore give me a really flat frequency response which is so important for the commercial hip hop tracks I tend to mix. These speaker have great stereo imaging and I can work on them for long periods of time without my ears getting tired. Well done unity Audio!” – James Reynolds

Joerg Mayr is a mixing, recording and mastering engineer from Munich, Germany. He’s featured on our Unity Audio products user page talking about the Rock MKII monitors that he uses for his projects:

“For me it was love at first sight – the description ‘brutally honest’ exactly hits the nailhead. During the test phase, I re-worked some of my favourite mixes, and was able to improve, what I thought was already perfect. What I really like is the tremendous separation of bass signals, the very fast dynamic response and crystall clear high end – I think, these speakers don’t inflate anything and that really helps a lot in making critical decisions regarding the balances of a mix that’s supposed to translate well in the real world.”– Joerg Mayr

We caught up with his more recent projects at the beginning of this month. He’s currently been working on:

We’ve had some studio shots sent to us by Niall John Acott from the beginning of June. He took them whilst working on the iTunes recordings for the BBC’s vocal talent show ‘The Voice’ at Pinewood Studios. Good to see some Unity gear supplied by Kazbar Systems in his pictures, including a pair of Rocks!

London based producer Mark Rankin is another prolific producer who has chosen the Unity Audio Rock MK II monitors for all his critical tracking and mixing requirements.

Mark has used them on several recent projects including Aluna George ‘Body Music’ album, Willy Moon ‘ Here’s Willy Moon’, Lianne La Havas ‘ Is your love big enough?’ Approached at the end of last year by Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Homme to tackle the recording and mixing tasks of the eagerly awaited forthcoming Queens of the Stone Age album ‘Like Clockwork’ at their own Pink Duck studio in Burbank, after Josh heard Marks impressive skills on Adele’s award winning track ‘Rolling In The Deep’.

Before the project started he mentioned to band founder Josh Homme about the Rock MK II monitors, and so a pair of Rocks and Boulders were shipped in for the entire album project and Josh Homme became an convert and ended up purchasing both models.

“When I first got them it was a revelation, its what I’ve been looking for but I’ve never been able to find these qualities in a near-field before. They’re smooth in the top end and have amazing bass extension and depth that goes on and on. I can see the bass, you get this pictures like nothing else and you know where you are with them. Before The Rocks I was always going back to the usual NS10’s, but now I’m so confident in The Rocks I’m finally put the NS10’s out to pasture! ”

Bernard Sumner from New Order recently auditioned a pair of Unity Audio Rock MK II’s with the Avalanche sub-woofer and liked them so much he bought 3 pairs including a pair for drummer Stephen Morris. All of them are being used for the forthcoming New Order album due out soon.

‘We have recently started recording for a new album, and I was looking for speakers that didn’t fatigue my ears during long sessions – with the Ribbon tweeter I have found this in the Unity Audio Rock MK II.

The detail is stunning, you can balance very easily and effectively without having to push the volume. The upper mids and high end are very smooth and accurate, the bass end is great for tracking, and in conjunction with ‘the Avalanche’ sub, and the great feature of being switchable in and out via a foot pedal, I can check out the sub bass detail whilst mixing. I’ve used a lot of studio monitors but the Rocks are something very special. They will improve your mixes and recordings and what you do really translates well to the real world environment’.

The music industry would be at a loss without British record producer John Leckie. Since he began his career in 1970 at Abbey Rd Studios as an in-house engineer, he has gone on to produce pioneering acts ranging through the likes of Radiohead (The Bends), The Stone Roses (The Stone Roses), Muse (Showbiz), Verve (A Storm in Heaven), Ride (Carnival of Light) and My Morning Jacket (Z). All of these albums have had a cult following, every success marked by the intrinsic individual sound of each band. John has been added the growing list of producers who have chosen Unity Audio Rocks Monitors for their work.

“Scary speakers to listen to your mix on as they really expose what’s there ! Anyone working in professional studios today should hear these speakers.”

“I been listening to studio monitors for many years and The Rocks are up there with the best. I can spend all day listening loud or quiet and never taxing on the ears. I feel I’m going to be working with them for many years to come. These are very special monitor speakers and every audio professional should try them out. You’ll be surprised.”

“The Rocks rock!” – John Leckie, Producer and Recording Engineer

UK producer Guy Massey is another hit making producer that is making all his critical decisions on the Unity Audio Rock MK II active monitor.

“I’ve been hearing lots of positive reactions to the Unity Audio Rock MK II monitors and decided to check them out for myself on some mix work and I found them to be really easy to mix on, I could hear everything in such detail due to the amazing clarity. The sound scape seems so obvious that I can place things much more easier than I could on my previous monitor setup. The low end is incredible, I no longer have bass paranoia, I can mix with total confidence!”

Mike Crossey is another prominent UK producer that has been using Unity Audio Rocks and Boulders for his work. He is currently based at Livingston Studios in London and has racked up a host of notable production and mixing credits . He recently took the helm on Jake Bugg’s self-titled album which debuted at #1 on the UK Album Charts which was recently certified platinum and has racked up another hit with The 1975′s “Chocolate”. His previous production work has included artists such as Foals, Tribes, The Kooks, Blood Red Shoes, and Razorlight.

“I wasn’t even in the market for a pair of monitors until I heard The Rocks. The soundstage on them is huge though unhyped and true. They are very impressive indeed. I used to spend hours agonizing over the low end, The rocks just get me there so much quicker than before . I’d say they save me 2 hours a day on my mixing so they actually help me get more sleep!”

Tom Dalgety has just got himself a pair of Rocks with single leg Monoliths. Having spent the last decade working alongside some of the worlds finest producers (John Leckie, Steve Osborne, Spike Stent), Tom is forging a strong reputation of his own as a producer & mixer. He’s also credited as co-engineer on Band of Skulls’ album ‘Sweet Sour’, an office favourite!

“I’d heard that a number of people who I trust and respect were moving over to them, so I thought I’d better give them a go. The definition in the bass is fantastic : if the bottom-end isn’t focussed in a mix, then The Rocks really show that up! You don’t get the instant gratification that you get with some active monitors – but thats a good thing! They make you work hard – but the results are worth it!”
